Another weekend gone and another week of reviews for CouchMunky! Here is what’s been going on for the weekend of July 27th: Ready? Let’s go: Momma Mia – I lied. I did go to this movie over the weekend, and I gotta tell you Munky’s something. This was the best movie I’ve seen in a long time! I was able to get caught up on some sleep, and I was able to finish a long chapter in this book I’ve been reading all week. As you may know, this movie is an adaptation of a Broadway musical, featuring the songs of ABBA, with Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan. I remember waking up at one point and heard Pierce Brosnan singing the song “S.O.S.” and I burst an eardrum and the lens in my eyeglasses began to crack. Fortunately, the theater had a doctor on call in the lobby and I was able to receive medical treatment. Munky Doo! X-Files - I Want to Believe – I kind of wanted to see this one, but reviews are very bad, and the movie isn’t expected to do well at all. Sorry, but it’s going to be a DVD review at best. Not reviewed Step Brothers – no, no no... I’d rather be back in line for “Momma Mia” than to see this one. Not reviewed And coming up this weekend: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor – Brendan Fraser in the third installment of this series, this time without the Rock. Ummm... Chinese mummies? I hear if you break one open, you get your fortune. Confucius says “he who make a Mummy 3 have bad luck, you wait and see”. Swing Vote – a Kevin Costner comedy? Haven’t seen one of those since “The Guardian”. Skipping to books: When Television Was Young by Ed McMahon – I saw him just last week on “Family Feud”, wearing a neck brace and talking about how he can’t make any money with his broken neck and his house is going into foreclosure. So I went to Wal-Mart and spent $6.95 on his new book (you know, just to help him out), and was surprised to find out it wasn’t bad. This book is about the early days of black and white television, and filled with information and trivia. Ed knows what he is talking about; he was there, since the early days of television in the 1930’s, through radio before that, and even selling things through mail order via the Pony Express. Book is a great read, highly recommended. Munky Si! Let’s try some current DVD releases: Be Kind, Rewind – Jack Black is highly magnetized and erases all of the videos (videos?) at a movie rental store. So, before the owner finds out, they have to refilm all of the movies themselves so they can stay in business. I’m not sure I actually saw this, or whether it was a bad dream. Munky Doo! Who Killed the Electric Car? – Martin Sheen narrates a documentary on the death of the electric car. General Motors was going to revolutionize the industry by introducing these cars, saving the planet from pollution, but for some reason, the cars disappeared only a couple of years after they were introduced. You couldn’t buy one, they were only available for lease, and when the lease was up, General Motors would come and take the car back, secretly shipping them to Mesa, Arizona, and crushing them. Why? Munky Si! Websites of the week: www.newsfromme.com - Mark Evanier is a comic book and television writer (he started out on television writing for the series “Welcome Back Kotter”), and knows practically everything about Hollywood and pop culture. Nearly every day (and frequently several times a day), he posts all kinds of thoughts and observations, links to old television commercials, old YouTube videos, and recommendations of bad movies showing up on the TCM network. Give this one an eyeball; I think you’ll like it. Movie Trailers www.saw5.com - Oh boy, do we really need another one of these? http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809955924/trailer - Can Jim Carey make a funny movie again? He’s sure gonna try. Agree/Disagree? Something you want reviewed or want to review it yourself? Comments are especially welcome, and I’ll try to get you a response to every comment/submission. You can contact me at
